ST. GEORGE, Utah – The No. 12 Kent State University women's golf team wrapped up a dominant win at the BYU at Entrada Classic, finishing the tournament at 2-over par 866 (289-286-291).
At the par 72 Entrada at Snow Canyon, Kent State defeated second-place host BYU by 13 strokes. The rest of the field was defeated by 40 strokes, with third place going to Tulsa at 42-over par. It was the team's first win of the spring and second the 2016-17 season.
"This was a solid win for us," said head coach Greg Robertson. "We slowed down a bit at the end but overall this was a really good performance. In the last four years, we've had 13 individual titles from seven different competitors."
Highlighting the performance was an individual victory for Karoline Stormo, the first of her young collegiate career. The freshman finished at 4-under par for the tournament after shooting an even par 72 Tuesday. She finished the three-round tournament with 14 birdies.
"We are really happy for Karoline," Robertson said. "She had to battle through an injury and fought a bug before the tournament, but she wanted to compete and was cleared to travel. We're proud of her accomplishment and we are already excited to get back out."
All four scorers for Kent State finished in the top-10. Tied for second was freshman Pimnipa Panthong, who finished the tournament at an even par. She shot 1-over par 73 on Tuesday, with two birdies. She was one of three players that finished at par or better.
Nationally ranked golfers Wad Phaewchimplee and Michaela Finn each finished tied for seventh at 4-over par 220. Phaewchimplee finished the tournament shooting a 74 Tuesday, while Finn shot an even par 72. Kelly Nielsen wrapped up the winning lineup in a tie for 47th at 22-over par. She shot an 80 on Tuesday, with a pair of birdies.
The Flashes will look to build on this win at the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate in Kennesaw, Georgia beginning March 27.
