
Field Hockey Bested in Close Finish Against Miami

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University field hockey team (4-8-0, 1-1-0 MAC) made its 2017 home debut Friday in a razor thin loss to the Miami Redhawks (5-6-0, 3-0-0 MAC), 1-0.
The lone goal in the match came early, when Miami reached the scoreboard in the sixth minute. Estel Roig set up the goal as the inserter on a penalty corner. Paula Portugal stopped it and immediately took a shot on goal to take the lead.
Miami continued to look strong defensively at the start, but the run of play would tip towards the Golden Flashes towards the end of the first half. Kent State fired off three shots over the final 10 minutes of the half but could not equalize.
Kent State's offense played with urgency in the second half, with the stats weighted heavily towards the home team. Kent State earned nine penalty corners in the period, seven of which came in the final 18 minutes. On the other end, the Flash defense only allowed two second-half shots, one of which was on goal.
Kent State would go full throttle at the end of the match, recording four shots in the last three minutes. Miami recorded seven saves in the match, with three coming in the final three minutes. Kent State had a penalty corner and shot on goal registered in the final 30 seconds, but did not get on the board.
In the end, Kent State outshot Miami, 16-6, with seven shots on target. Kent State had 12 penalty corners to Miami's six. Ines Delpech was the leader on both offense and defense, with a team-high six shots, four on goal. Kylie LeBlanc returned to the goalkeeper position, recording a pair of saves.
Kent State remains at home for its next match, taking on No. 4 Penn State Sunday at noon.
