HOUSTON - Two thirds of The Dickson was washed away on Monday, before No. 16 Kent State earned a fourth place finish Tuesday in the abbreviated 18-hole tournament. The Golden Flashes shot a 4-over 292 at The Woodlands Country Club, led by Pimnipa Panthong's 2-under performance.
"It's disappointing the first day was canceled and we only had the chance to play 18," Head Coach Greg Robertson said. "We felt we had prepared well, and the team started to play pretty well toward the end of the round. We got off to a rough start, but it was nice to see them play hard for 18 holes and move up the leaderboard over the last nine."
Panthong, a sophomore from Thailand, tallied four birdies on her way to a fourth place tie. Two of her birdies came on par fives. Panthong's 70 was just three strokes behind Sasikarn Somboonsup of Texas A&M.
The Flashes were dominant on par fives, leading the tournament at 7-under. The next best performance came from TCU at 4-under.
A boost on the par fives came from freshman Kory Nielsen (Kent, Ohio), who birdied three of the four longest holes. Nielsen finished tied for 32nd place with a 2-over 74.
Sophomore Karoline Stormo (Tvedestrand, Norway) recorded back-to-back birdies on holes five and six to help her finish in 21st place with a 1-over 73.
Freshman Chloe Salort (Ermont, France) finished two strokes back of Stormo at 3-over. Salort's back-to-back birdies came on the first and second holes.
Junior Michaela Finn (Angelholm, Sweden) was burdened by a triple bogey on hole 14, but bounced back with two birdies in a four-hole span to finish 4-over.
Clemson topped the 17-team field with a 5-under 283.
Kent State returns to action March 12-13 at the BYU at Entrada Classic in St. George, Utah.
"We have a week and a half to prepare for BYU's tournament," Robertson said. "It's a great golf course, and we're looking forward to getting back out there after our win last year".
