
Flashes Fall 3-2 in Overtime to Spartans

EAST LANSING, Michigan βThe Kent State University field hockey team fell in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Michigan State Spartans in a neck-in-neck battle at Ralph Young Field in East Lansing, Michigan Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Clara Rodriguez Setó scored both goals and junior goalkeeper Mary Crumlish tallied 8 saves for the Flashes (0-2).
Action-packed from the start, the Spartans (1-1) went ahead 1-0 on a penalty stroke goal from Aisha Osinga in the 2ndminute of the game. The Flashes responded minutes later with four consecutive shots, ending withΒ Rodriguez Setó's first goal in the 7thminute. Junior Kortney Keller recorded the assist on the play.
The score remained until Michigan State's Kelsey Keener knocked in a goal in 21stminute to go up 2-1.
In the 26thminute of play, junior Laila Richter found an opportunity for a long shot that deflected off the goalkeeper's pads back toRodriguez Setó.Β Rodriguez Setó put it back to the goal to even up the score 2-2.Β
The second period became a defensive battle as there were zero goals on 11 shots and 4 saves compiled between the two teams. The Flashes narrowly missed the game-winner late in the second half when a shot into the net by Laila Richter was deemed high. The game proceeded into a single overtime period, ending in a sudden-victory goal in the 76thminute by MSU's Isa Van der Weij.
Up next, the Flashes will host Liberty Aug. 31 at 1 p.m. for the home opener at Murphy-Mellis Field.
