
Kent State Field Hockey Gears Up for Three-Game Homestand

KENT, Ohio – Coming off a 0-2 opening weekend in East Lansing, Michigan, the Kent State field hockey team is set to host a three-game homestand at Murphy-Mellis Field. The Flashes will face the No. 23 Liberty University Flames at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31 followed by Saint Louis University on Sunday Sept. 2 at 12:00 p.m. and No. 12 Northwestern on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 3:00 p.m.
The Flashes opened the 2018 season last weekend losing 1-0 to Old Dominion in a highly defensive matchup, holding the Monarchs to only four shots on goal, and then falling short 3-2 in overtime to Michigan State University.
Sophomore Clara Rodriguez Setó was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week following the opening weekend of play Tuesday afternoon.
SCOUTING LIBERTY UNIVERSITY
The No. 23 Liberty Flames opened the 2018 season 1-1, upsetting No. 17 James Madison 6-1 on Friday and falling short 4-3 in overtime to No. 3 Duke on Sunday.
Against JMU, the Flames turned in their largest margin of victory in a season opener in program history. Liberty saw four different players score the team's 6 goals in the contest. Senior Agueda Moroni exploded offensively, scoring a hat trick and tallying 2 assists for the Flames. In the net, junior Allison Schaefer totaled 4 saves off 10 shots in the net.
On Sunday, the Duke Blue Devils edged Liberty in an overtime contest after the Flames battled back from a 2-goal deficit. Moroni added a goal and an assist to her weekend totals.
The Flames swept the BIG EAST weekly awards as Moroni and Schaefer were selected as the BIG EAST Field Hockey Offensive Player of the week and Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the league on Tuesday. Moroni was also named the Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week, announced Wednesday.
SCOUTING SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY
The Saint Louis Billikens kicked off the season 2-1 with a pair of wins against LIU Brooklyn and Colgate and a 1-0 loss to Central Michigan.
SLU shutout LIU Brooklyn in the season opener, scoring two goals late in the game to win 2-0. The Billikens' goals came from Mimi Leonard and Lili Wareham. SLU goalkeeper Sasha Sander made five saves in the shutout.
Following a 1-0 loss to Central Michigan, SLU defeated Colgate 3-1 on Monday. Emily Wastell scored twice and Carly Kissinger added a goal and two assists for the Billikens.
SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN
No. 12 Northwestern (1-1) opened 2018 against No. 1 UConn, falling to the Huskies 4-2. All six goals came from penalty corners. Seniors Puck Pentenga and Charlotte Vaziri both were able to find the net against the defending National Champs.
The 'Cats wrapped up the Big Ten opening weekend of play defeating No. 15 Stanford 3-2 in a thrilling double-overtime matchup. Pentenga added 3 assists to her weekend totals, as the 'Cats' three goals came from Saar de Breij, Kirsten Mansfield, and Lily Katzman. Saar de Breij scored the decisive goal in the three minutes into the second overtime in a one-on-one with the Stanford goalkeeper.
Northwestern will face No. 3 Duke and Boston College in College Park, Maryland before facing off against the Flashes on Sept. 4.
