KENT, Ohio – The Kent State field hockey team (2-5) is set to travel across the country to compete at the University of the Pacific and No. 23 Stanford. The Flashes will push off against Pacific in Stockton, California on Friday, Sept. 14 at 6:00 p.m./3:00 p.m. PT and will wrap up the trip against Stanford on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 3:00 p.m./12:00 p.m. PT.
The Flashes began their five-game road swing last weekend falling to No. 6 Penn State and defeating Temple, 6-2. The Kent State offense exploded in the second period against Temple, as five different players tallied goals for the Flashes. Senior Jessica Apelt led the attack with 2 goals on 8 shots, all on goal.
SCOUTING PACIFIC
The Pacific Tigers are off to a 4-3 start to the season, and have notched 16 goals, averaging 2.3 goals per game. Last week, Pacific toured the State Up North, traveling to Central Michigan as well as No. 10 Michigan and Michigan State.
Pacific saw six different players score goals in its 7-0 victory over Central Michigan on Thursday, Sept. 6. The remainder of the trip featured two overtime contests against the Big Ten opponents. On Friday, Sept. 7, the Tigers fell 2-1 in the 72ndminute at No. 10 Michigan after tying the game late in the second half to force overtime. On Sunday, Sept. 9, Pacific came out victorious in a thrilling double-overtime contest against the Michigan State Spartans. Kriekie van Wyk netted the winning goal in the 88thminute of play.
Kent State is 5-0 all-time against Pacific, last defeating the Tigers 3-2 in California on Sept. 5, 2016.
SCOUTING NO. 23 STANFORD
No. 23 Stanford (3-3) is currently on a three-game winning streak following last week's matchups against Ohio, Indiana, and Central Michigan. The Cardinal compiled 20 goals in the past three games, allowing only 2 goals against.
On Thursday, Sept. 6, Stanford's 8-1 victory over Ohio University featured an impressive 5-goal performance by Corinne Zanolli, who netted 2 more goals in the Cardinal's 4-1 win over Indiana a day later. The Cardinal rounded out the weekend, defeating Central Michigan, 8-0, on Sunday, Sept. 9. Zanolli, named Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week, added an additional 3 goals against CMU to end the weekend.
All-time against the Cardinal, Kent State is 2-4, falling 5-1 in the last matchup on Sept. 4, 2016.
Stanford will host Yale on Friday, Sept. 14 before hosting the Golden Flashes on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 3:00 p.m./12:00 p.m. PT.
