
Flashes Pick Up First Win of the Season

KENT, Ohio β The Kent State University field hockey team (1-3) shut out Saint Louis (2-3), 1-0 at Murphy-Mellis Field Sunday afternoon to notch its first win in the win column this season. Senior Courtney Weise scored the lone goal of the game for the Flashes.
"It's just nice to end the weekend with a positive performance," head coach Kathleen Wiler stated, "We are looking forward to getting back on the field Tuesday against Northwestern."
The Flashes were hot out of the gate in the first period, tallying the decisive goal on the team's second shot of the game at 2:50. Junior Berta Jover Llorens fired a pass from outside the shooting circle to Weise, who skipped the ball past the Billikens' goalkeeper to go up 1-0. The score remained through regulation.
Kent State played a tough defensive game, warding off the SLU's 4 consecutive penalty corners mid-way through the first half, and 7 total in the contest. The Kent State defense held the Billikens to just 6 shot attempts on the day.Β Β Junior goalkeeper Mary Crumlish recorded the shutout for the Flashes, tallying 4 saves.
Up next, the Flashes will round out their three-game homestand, hosting Northwestern University on Tuesday Sept. 4 at 3:00 p.m.
