Four Golden Flashes Earn ASUN Conference Honors

MACON, Ga. – Four Golden Flashes earned ASUN postseason honors, the conference office announced Wednesday (May 1). Midfielder Abby Jones led the way as a 2019 ASUN First Team All-Conference selection and was joined by Lluna Katz, Grace Merrill and Madison Rapier on the All-Freshman Team.
Jones led the Flashes in points (52), draw controls (51), assists (20) and free position goals (8). Her 52 total points are the most in Kent State history and rank ninth in the ASUN. The Coon Rapids, Minn., native was also second on the team in goals (32) and caused turnovers (15) and third in ground balls (28). Jones scored the first goal in Kent State lacrosse history against Cincinnati on Feb. 10.
Jones was ninth in the ASUN in both draw controls and free position goals, while ranking fourth in the conference with 63 shots on goal. Her 10 assists in ASUN action ranked fourth in the conference. The freshman midfielder was one of just five Golden Flashes to start all 17 games this season.
Katz paced the Flashes in goals (34) this season and was tied for second on the team with 15 caused turnovers. She scored a career-high five goals against Kennesaw State and finished tied for fourth in the conference with 16 goals in ASUN action.
Rapier started all 13 games she appeared in this season for Kent State, tallying eight goals and three assists. The Powell, Ohio product scored a career-high four goals against St. Bonaventure on March 3. Rapier was second on the team with 39 draw controls. She also recorded 13 caused turnovers and scooped up 15 ground balls.
Merrill was the leader in goal for the Flashes this season, starting all 17 games and recording 165 saves to lead the ASUN and tie for 20th in the NCAA. She made a career-high 20 saves against Saint Francis (Pa.) on March 20. Merrill recorded double-digit saves in eight of 17 games. She also led the team and was sixth in the ASUN with 42 ground balls.
Kent State lacrosse finished its inaugural season with a 2-15 record with wins over Delaware State and Howard. The Flashes beat the Hornets, 21-6, on March 29 to secure their first win in program history. Their first ASUN conference win came on April 14, as the Flashes beat the Bison, 17-1.
