KENT, Ohio – Former Penn State standout Abby Detering has been named assistant coach for the Kent State women's volleyball program, head coach Don Gromala announced on Friday.
"I am very excited to be a part of the Kent State volleyball program" Detering stated. "I watched Kent State volleyball growing up, and it sparked my interest in the sport I love. I am honored to work with the staff and talented group of women, and look forward to a fun, competitive season."
Detering, who spent parts of the past two seasons playing professionally in Europe following AVCA All-America honorable mention recognition her senior season with the Nittany Lions, will work primarily with the Golden Flashes' setters and offense.
"Abby is an incredible addition to our staff," Gromala said. "She has learned from the best college coaches in the country and competed at the highest levels, so her ability to relate to our student-athletes and develop them as players and young women will be exceptional. Abby will also bring a variety of perspectives to the continued growth of our program, while her energy and passion for the sport will resonate with all of the student-athletes she mentors and those around her."
Detering began her collegiate career at Florida before transferring to Penn State prior to her junior season, providing her the opportunity to learn the game under the guidance of the two winningest active NCAA Division I head coaches in Russ Rose and Mary Wise. She was part of 12 NCAA Tournament victories during her four seasons as a student-athlete.
While at Penn State, Detering saw time at setter and right side and totaled 1,793 assists and 254 kills in two seasons. She earned All-America honors as a senior while helping the Nittany Lions post a 33-2 record and earn a spot in the national semifinals.
Upon graduation at Penn State in December 2017, Detering signed a professional contract to play the remainder of the season with SG Kelag Klagenfurt of the Austrian A1 League. She played for Pays d'Aix Venelles of the French A1 League during the 2018-19 season
Detering organized her own volleyball camp and conducted private lessons in multiple Midwest states last summer.
A native of Mentor, Detering earned a bachelor of communication arts and sciences from Penn State University.
