
Flashes Take on Ranked Iowa and Michigan This Weekend

KENT, Ohio- The Kent State University field hockey team will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. this weekend for a two-game road test. The Flashes will face No. 8 Iowa in a neutral site contest on Saturday at 1 p.m. before their matchup with No. 9 Michigan on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Kent State stands 4-3 overall after claiming its second shutout of the season in a 5-0 victory over Saint Louis. The Flashes outshot the Billikens 23-4 and also tied a season-best five goals, all coming from five different players. In the game against Fairfield, Kent State came up short and fell 2-1. Claudia Ortiz scored the Flashes' lone goal with just 15 seconds remaining.
Clara Rodriguez Seto and Laila Richter lead the team with five and two goals, respectively, while goalkeeper Azure Fernsler maintains a 1.43 goals-against average and a .773 save percentage.
SCOUTING IOWA
The eighth-ranked Hawkeyes are 4-2 overall after splitting last weekend. Iowa came away with a 4-2 over California before falling, 2-1, to No. 2 Duke in overtime. Iowa totaled 24 shots to California's four snd nine corners to two. Duke shot 11 times across all periods, compared to Iowa's 12. The Hawkeyes earned three penalty corners opposed to Duke's five, capitalizing on one with a goal from Anthe Nijziel.
Senior Sophie Sunderland leads the team in goals (5), followed by Katie Birch with four. Senior Goalkeeper Leslie Speight has six saves and maintains a 1.26 goals-against average and a .538 save percentage.
The Hawkeyes lead the all-time series 8-1. Iowa's only loss to the Flashes came in 2010. The teams last met back in 2016 when Iowa defeated Kent State 2-0.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN
No. 9 Michigan stands 4-2 overall after back-to-back wins over No. 3 UConn and Central Michigan. The Wolverines came out with a 3-2 win over the Huskies before a 3-0 shutout over the Chippewas. The Wolverines have won four of their last five games since dropping the season opener against No. 1 North Carolina (Aug. 30), including each of the last three contests.
Senior Meg Dowthwaite leads the Wolverines with four goals this season. Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Spieker has contributed to a pair of Wolverine shutout wins this season, most recently earning two saves through 51:27 played at Central Michigan (Sept. 15). She also earned a complete-game shutout against No. 10 Wake Forest (Sept. 1).
Michigan leads the all-time series 12-4 and earned a 3-1 win when the two teams last met back in 2015.
