KENT, Ohio- The Kent State University field hockey team wrapped up its weekend homestand after a 2-1 victory over the 24th-ranked Maine on Sunday afternoon at Murphy-Mellis Field.
Kent State improved to 3-2 on the season while Maine dropped to 0-3.
The Black Bears controlled much of the game and outshot the Flashes 16-10 and 13-4 with shots on goal, however, junior goalkeeper Azure Fernsler was a wall with 10 saves on the day.
The Flashes got on the board first at the 12:34 minute mark when senior Berta Jover Llorens carried the ball up the right goal line and passed it to sophomore Luisa Knapp for her third goal of the season. Junior Clara Rodriguez Seto put Kent State ahead 2-0 with a one-timer tip-in from senior Laila Richter in the 22nd minute.
Maine's lone goal came with just 15 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but the Black Bears simply ran out of time to get the equalizer.
Four Flashes recorded two or more shots today with Richter and Rodriguez Seto leading the charge with three shots each. Knapp and junior Emma Bressler both fired two shots.
The Flashes hit the road this weekend to St. Louis, Mo. as Kent State will face Fairfield on Friday at 4 p.m. and Saint Louis on Sunday at 3 p.m.
