
Women’s Hoops Defeats Duquesne, Improves to 7-1

KENT, Ohio — The Kent State women's basketball team held off a late rally by visiting Duquesne on Wednesday evening at the M.A.C. Center, earning a 71-66 victory.
The Golden Flashes (7-1) led by 13 in the closing minutes of the third period, but the Dukes got within a single point multiple times in the fourth period. Leading by two, junior Clare Kelly used a skip pass over the zone defense to setup senior Lindsey Thall for an open three-pointer that made it 68-63 and gave Kent State some breathing room with 1:05 remaining. An offensive rebound allowed Duquesne to answer the three-pointer on the following possession, but only 19.8 seconds remained. The Flashes sank three free throws down the stretch to win by five.
Junior Katie Shumate matched her season-high with 21 points to lead Kent State. Sophomore Casey Santoro shot 4-of-5 from behind the three-point arc and finished with 19 points to match her career-high. Santoro also grabbed a career-high eight boards and had three assists to share the team lead. Thall added 16 points and game-high nine rebounds.
The Flashes made 11 triples in the contest, reaching double-figures for the fourth time this season.
Kent State will continue its four-game homestand on Saturday, Dec. 11 against Clarion. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m.
