The Kent State women's basketball team will begin a three-game, five-day homestand at the M.A.C. Center on Saturday with a 12 p.m. Mid-American Conference game against Miami.
In their first game following a 25-day break, the Golden Flashes (5-3, 4-1 MAC) lost to Ohio, 85-70, in a road contest on Wednesday. The game was much closer than the final score indicates, as Kent State had the ball with 2:41 to play and trailing by four but was unable to connect on three shot attempts during the possession. The Flashes missed their final eight shots overall while the Bobcats scored the final 11 points on 1-of-1 shooting from the floor and 9-of-10 at the charity stripe.
Four players are averaging more than 9.0 points per game and eight have posted double-figure scoring nights. Sophomore Nila Blackford is one of two MAC players averaging a double-double with team-best marks of 14.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Sophomore Katie Shumate (11.3 ppg) scored a season-high 23 points on Wednesday and leads the MAC in three-point (.531) and free throw (.944) shooting. Junior Lindsey Thall adds 9.9 points per game and is the top shot blocker (1.5 bpg) in the MAC for the third year in a row while averaging a career-best 5.1 rebounds per game. Junior Mariah Modkins (9.3 ppg) is having a breakout season and leads the Flashes in assists (24) while ranking second in three-point field goals (13) and steals (9). Freshman Casey Santoro (7.1 ppg) is averaging 9.6 points per game in five MAC contests and junior Hannah Young (4.3 ppg) has averaged 11.5 points and 7.5 rebounds over the past two games to lead the Flashes' reserves.
