
Flashes Take Down Longwood in Overtime

FARMVILLE, Virginia – The Kent State field hockey team (1-1, 1-1 MAC) avenged their loss from yesterday with a 2-1 victory in overtime against Longwood at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field.
The Lancers struck first with a goal in the first period by Kate Frey, but the Golden Flashes would not be denied this time. Junior Helena Cambra Soler hammered a shot in at the 26:18 minute mark to tie the game at 1-1. Her sister, sophomore Maria Cambra Soler, had the assist on the goal.
Both teams were unable to break the tie in the second half and the game headed to overtime.
It took Kent State 4 minutes and 19 seconds to score in overtime to secure the 2-1 victory. Sophomore Sydney Washburn, who led the Flashes offensive attack with three shots and two shots on goal, found the back of the net on a rebound to win it for Kent State.
The Flashes led in total shots (8-6) and in shots on goal (6-3), while the Lancers led in penalty corners (4-3). Senior goalkeeper Azure Fernsler registered two saves for Kent State.
The Flashes return to action next weekend when they travel to Louisville, Kentucky to take on Bellarmine University on Friday, Mar. 19 and Saturday, Mar. 20. Both games are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
