KENT, Ohio – The Kent State field hockey team shutout Ball State for the second day in a row, earning a 2-0 victory Saturday at Murphy-Mellis Field.
Senior Azure Fernsler made two of her three saves in the opening period to keep the Cardinals from gaining early momentum.
The Golden Flashes (7-3, 5-3 MAC) broke the scoreless tie with 3:23 remaining in the third period when junior Helena Cambra Soler swept the ball past the keeper into the bottom left corner of the net after receiving a pass near the front of the goal from senior Clara Rodriguez Seto.
Fernsler thwarted Ball State's best scoring opportunity of the day with a kick save to knock away a shot on goal in the final minute of the third period.
Kent State added an insurance goal with just under six minutes to play. Helena Cambra Soler received the initial pass off a penalty corner, but instead of setting it for the striker near her, sent it to sophomore Maria Cambra Soler, who took advantage of the unsuspecting defense and found the back of the net.
The Flashes used a decisive 12-2 advantage in penalty corners to lead 16-7 in shots. Maria Cambra Soler took seven shots to lead the attack.
Kent State is scheduled to visit Ohio for its final road games of the season next weekend.
