Flashes Beat No. 25 Maine in Double Overtime

EVANSTON, Ill. โ The No. 23 Kent State field hockey team (4-2, 0-0 MAC) took down another ranked opponent in No. 25 Maine in double overtime, winning by a score of 4-3 at Lakeside Field on Saturday afternoon.
Maine would strike early off a deflected penalty corner and would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The third quarter is where Kent State's offense caught fire. Junior Sydney Washburn and senior Luisa Knapp would score two goals in quick succession to give the Flashes the lead. Maine would score again to tie it a couple minutes later, but junior Maria Cambra Soler struck one more time for the Flashes to take a 3-2 lead into the fourth quarter. The Black Bears would even things back up, sending the game to overtime.
Both teams were unable to score in the first sudden death overtime period. Kent State broke through in the second with a top shelf goal by senior Helena Cambra Soler to secure the victory 4-3. The goal was assisted by sophomore Jenna McCrudden. ย ย
Azure Fernsler continued her stellar play in goal and recorded a career-high 11 saves.
Kent State will face off again at Murphy-Mellis Field against Ohio on Friday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m.
