Kent State Falls to Duquesne

KENT, Ohio - The Kent State lacrosse team hosted Duquesne Sunday, in a make-up game originally scheduled for Friday that got postponed due to weather. But the Dukes came out on top in this one, defeating the Golden Flashes, 15-4. This brings Kent State's record to 0-2 early in this 2022 season, while Duquesne improves to 2-1.
Duquesne came out aggressively on offense, and was able to maintain that level of play for all 60 minutes. They were led offensively by Sam King, Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw, and Mackenzie Leszczynski, who each scored three goals. Alana Piano also had three points, thanks to scoring two goals of her own and getting an assist as well. Of the Dukes' 30 shot attempts, 15 were goals.
Kent State struggled to find their rhythm early, allowing the Dukes to go ahead 2-0 with 12:43 to go in the first quarter. However, the Flashes then turned it around in a major way, scoring two straight goals of their own to tie things back up. Abby Jones put Kent State on the board at 9:40 with a free position goal. Kenzie Sklar then picked up her seventh goal of the season with 5:27 to go in the first quarter, with Jones providing the assist.
After Duquesne went up 3-2 going into the second quarter, Kent State evened the score once more with 12:52 to go in the quarter on an unassisted goal by Megan Kozar. Kozar would go on to score again in the fourth quarter, serving as Kent State's final goal of the game with 4:11 left in regulation.
But the Flashes had trouble stopping the Dukes, who saw seven different players score goals, three of which off of free position shots. Leszczynski, Piano, Jillian Caroselli, and Hanna Pawela also all grabbed assists. While Duquesne beat Kent State in ground balls, 21-16, the Flashes won the draw control battle, 14-8.
In terms of goalkeeping, Duquesne's Mady Piersielak had a 50 percent stoppage rate, allowing through four of eight Kent State shots. Kent State utilized two goalies, with Ella Gravitt saving seven shots and Madison Flannigan saving three.
Next up for head coach Brianne Tierney and the Flashes is a trip down the road to take on archrival Akron. That game is set to begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
