AKRON, Ohio - The Kent State lacrosse team looks ahead to its first road game of the 2022 season, when they travel the short distance to Akron to face off with their Mid-American Conference rival on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
About the Golden Flashes
Kent State enters play with an 0-2 record on the season. Their last contest was at home on Sunday, when they lost to Duquesne, 15-4. Abby Jones put Kent State on the board at 9:40 with a free position goal. Kenzie Sklar then picked up her seventh goal of the season with 5:27 to go in the first quarter, with Jones providing the assist.
After Duquesne went up 3-2 going into the second quarter, Kent State evened the score once more with 12:52 to go in the quarter on an unassisted goal by Megan Kozar. Kozar would go on to score again in the fourth quarter, serving as Kent State's final goal of the game with 4:11 left in regulation. However, that would not be enough to come out on top against the Dukes, who came away with the victory.
But Sunday's game served as a stepping stone for the Flashes to build upon in future games. And their first crack at showing that growth comes on Wednesday, when they venture into Summit County to take on Akron.
About the Zips
Akron currently sits at 1-2 for the season. After winning their first game of the season against St. Bonaventure, 6-5 (getting six goals from six different players), the Zips proceeded to lose to at Wofford, 14-9, and at Gardner-Webb, 17-7.
Izzy Szejk and Alexis Kiefer lead Akron in goals this season with five apiece. The Zips have a shot percentage of .289 and a shots-on-goal percentage of .711. But Akron has won less draw controls than their opponents, 39-31, a category which the Flashes have done well in (Kent State beat Duquesne in draw controls on Sunday, 14-8). The Zips also have the same amount of turnovers as turnovers allowed at 60 for both.
History
In the only other meetings between these two teams in history in 2021, Kent State came out victorious at home in the first game, 9-8, before losing on the road in the second matchup. The Flashes grabbed the win at home thanks in large part to five goals by Abby Jones.
