CLINTON, S.C. - Friday night, the Kent State lacrosse team traveled to South Carolina to play Presbyterian. The Golden Flashes came away from the game victorious, putting up a season-high 15 goals in their first win of the year and defeating Presbyterian by three.
Junior Kenzie Sklar dazzled for Kent State, scoring five goals in the match to put her season total at a team-high 13. Sophomore Jackie Wolford and senior Kelli Bailey also scored three goals apiece for the Flashes, and senior Abby Jones contributed two of her own to add to the offensive onslaught. Additional goals from freshman Allie Lee and senior Madison Rapier rounded out the scoring for the Flashes. Jones and Sklar each got an assist along the way as well.
Defensively, Kent State did enough to get the victory, with junior goalie Madison Flannigan making six saves in the process and getting the win. It wasn't due to the fact that Presbyterian didn't coming out in full force offensively though, because they certainly did, as evidenced by their 12 goals, including seven alone from midfielder Abby Edmisten. Kent State just found ways to contain their opponent when needed, taking more shots than Presbyterian (29-22) and shots on-goal (24-18).
Furthermore, the Flashes forced Presbyterian to turn the ball over 18 times, while only turning it over themselves 16 times. Kent State had more ground balls, 23-18, as well as draw controls, 17-14. Presbyterian took more free position shots than Kent State, 8-6, but failed to take advantage of this opportunity. And in terms of penalties, each side had four yellow cards, with Presbyterian garnering a green card as well to Ryann Doyle in the third quarter.
Kent State is now 2-0 lifetime against Presbyterian, as they beat them last year as well, 21-12.
The Flashes' will now look to keep this winning momentum going into their next game on Sunday, when they stay in South Carolina to take on Wofford at 1 p.m.
