YPSILANTI, Mich. — Five three-point field goals during the fourth quarter helped Kent State put 26 points on the board in the period and rally for a 70-61 victory Saturday afternoon at Eastern Michigan.
The Golden Flashes (12-7, 4-6 MAC) made 10 three-pointers for the first time since the first matchup with the Eagles on Jan. 15, an 83-58 win. Just like that first game, Kent State dominated the final 20 minutes, outscoring its host 45-28 to erase an eight-point halftime deficit.
Junior Nila Blackford led all players with 17 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Senior Lindsey Thall was right behind with 16 points, while junior Katie Shumate and senior Hannah Young added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Senior Mariah Modkins finished with a season-high nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the three-point arc.
Junior Clare Kelly registered a career-high six assists, including four in the final period. Her only basket of the day, a three-pointer with 3:12 remaining, made it a seven-point game and gave Kent State much-needed breathing room.
After not being outrebounded during the first 17 games of season, the Flashes were unable to win the battle on the boards for the second outing in a row. EMU's relentless attacking of missed shots resulted in a 45-30 advantage, which included 20 on the offensive side.
Kent State will have a quick turnaround before returning to action Monday night against Miami. Tip from the M.A.C. Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
