KENT, Ohio - On Saturday, the Kent State lacrosse team took on Detroit Mercy in a midseason Mid-American Conference matchup. The Golden Flashes came away with the victory, their first home win of the year, 16-11.
It was one of Kent State's more sound victories of the season, with the Flashes leading by as many as 10 at one point and a continuous clock being implemented for a period of time, before Detroit was able to cut the lead back down to single digits. The Titans would score the last five goals of the game and make their deficit five, but time was not on their side, and Kent State was able to hold on for the win.
Sophomore Jackie Wolford and junior Kenzie Sklar each scored four goals for Kent State in the game, raising their season totals to team-highs of 29 and 24 respectively. Senior Megan Kozar also had an outstanding performance with three goals herself and an assist. Junior Morgan Kubicki had four points as well, thanks to a goal and three assists.
Junior Madison Flannigan had eight saves and got the victory for the Flashes, while Meredith Leavell got the loss for the Titans despite being switched out for Hannah Shrader at the end of the third quarter.
Kent State took more shots than Detroit, 36-27, had more draw controls, 16-15, took more free-position shots, 8-7, and had more successful clears, 14-10.
Now having won their last two games, the Flashes will look to keep that momentum going into their next game, when they host Akron at Dix Stadium next Saturday at 1 p.m.
