YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Kent State lacrosse team traveled to Youngstown State on Saturday to take on the Penguins. But it would be YSU who came away with this one, beating the Golden Flashes, 18-11.
Youngstown State entered the game with a record of 8-7 overall (6-2 in the MAC) and possession of third place in the Mid-American Conference. The Golden Flashes, meanwhile, had an overall record of 5-19 (2-6 in the MAC) and were ranked fourth in the conference standings.
For Kent State, the highlight of the game in a losing effort came in the first quarter, when sophomore Jackie Wolford scored her 38th goal of the season, tying the all-time Kent State record. She'll now have one more game next week, at Detroit Mercy, to take sole control of the record.
Another bright spot for the Flashes came in the form of junior Morgan Kubicki, who picked up a hat trick and led the Flashes in scoring. Senior Abby Jones scored a pair of goals herself, putting her at 103 lifetime.
But Youngstown State was relentless with their offensive attack, and Kent State could only do so much to slow them down. After Kubicki scored the first goal of the game, YSU went on a 13-3 scoring run that stretched from the beginning of the first quarter to the end of the third quarter. With that much dominance over that long of a period of time, the Penguins put themselves in a position in which they made the possibility of a Kent State comeback more and more remote. This was led by Natalie Calandra-Ryan, who scored five goals in this one to improve her season total to a conference-best 57. Ali Korin also had four goals for the Penguins.
At goalkeeper, reigning MAC Defensive Player of the Week Taylor Monturo made 11 saves in the loss for Kent State. YSU's Savannah Clarke had 10 saves and the win.
With one more regular season game remaining at Detroit Mercy next Saturday, the Flashes find themselves in a potential win-and-get-in scenario. With Detroit Mercy, the fifth-ranked team in the conference, beating Akron on Saturday, they become tied with Kent State for possession of fourth place and the coveted final postseason spot. That means that next Saturday's game will be of utmost importance and hold action that you won't want to miss.
