KENT, Ohio - The Kent State lacrosse team prepares for its final regular season game of the season, wherein they will face off with Detroit Mercy for a chance to clinch a spot in the Mid-American Conference postseason tournament. The game is set to take place on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Michigan.
About the Golden Flashes
Kent State is currently 5-11 overall and 2-7 within the MAC. In their latest game last Saturday at Youngstown State, the Golden Flashes fell to the Penguins by a score of 18-11. This came despite a hat trick by junior Morgan Kubicki and an additional goal by sophomore Jackie Wolford, her 38th of the season, which ties her for the most goals scored in a season in program history.
Wolford will have the opportunity to break that record on Saturday, when the Flashes play their final regular season game of 2022. With a win, Kent State would claim the fourth and final seed in the MAC postseason tournament, and would then play the one seed and tournament host in the opening round, which would be either Robert Morris or Central Michigan. However, with a loss, Detroit Mercy, who shares an identical conference record with the Flashes at 2-7, would take that final postseason spot and leave the Flashes on the outside looking in.
Furthermore, a win on Saturday would give Kent State its highest season win total since its inception in 2019. And to achieve that mark, the Flashes will have to rely on players who have been with the team since the beginning, like seniors Megan Kozar and Abby Jones, who have a combined 49 goals this season.
About the Titans
Standing between Kent State and the first postseason game in program history are the Detroit Mercy Titans, who have oscillated between fifth and sixth place in the conference for the majority of the season before finding second life towards the end of the year. Detroit Mercy is coming off of a statement win on the road against Akron on Saturday, wherein they beat the Zips 14-8, both eliminating Akron from postseason contention and keeping their own hopes alive for another week.
The Titans will be leaning on the contributions of players like Cat Kopchia and Elise Harder, who are first and second on the team in points with 36 and 30 respectively. Harder found the back of the net four times in Detroit Mercy's win over Akron, giving her a total of 24 goals on the year.
When these two teams played each other in Kent on March 26, the Golden Flashes came away victorious, 16-11, thanks to four goals scored for Kent State by Wolford and four more scored by junior Kenzie Sklar. Kozar added three goals of her own, and Kubicki tacked on three assists in the win.
