The Kent State Field Hockey team makes its 2022 debut at Murphy-Mellis field with a pair of noon contests this weekend. The Golden Flashes will host 10th-ranked Syracuse on Friday, Sept. 2 and then battle Bucknell on Sunday, Sept. 4.
About the Flashes
Kent State split opening weekend at the Hoosier Invitational, taking down host Indiana 1-0 in overtime on Friday. Cecile van Eijck made a career-high 12 saves to shutout the Hoosiers attack and Maia Sarrabayrouse scored the winner seven minutes into overtime. Patricia Strunk setup the score by poking the ball away from an Indiana player near midfield and running it down before connecting with Sarrabayrouse on a pass in front of the net. The Flashes were then overpowered by No. 6 Liberty on Saturday, dropping a 9-0 contest.
Promotional Schedule
Schedule posters will be given to Kent State fans at the home opener on Friday. Sunday will be Kids Day with the Flashes participating in a post-game autograph session.
Scouting No. 10 Syracuse
The Orange dominated in a pair of neutral site victories against Sacred Heart and Vermont last weekend. Syracuse held a 43-8 advantage in shots and only allowed three shots on goal in a pair of shutout performances.
Joy Haarman and Charlotte de Vries led the attack with multiple goals each. de Vries is the daughter of former Kent State head coach and Varsity 'K' Hall of Fame member Kerry de Vries.
Scouting Bucknell
The Bison dropped a hard-fought 2-1 contest to No. 9 Louisville in the season opener and then fell to James Madison, 6-2. Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Lily Neilson scored in both games.
The Series
Kent State is 3-6 all-time against Syracuse but spoiled the 14th-ranked Orange's home opener last year with a 2-1 overtime. Jenna McCrudden provided the game-winner a little more than three minutes into the extra period.
The Golden Flashes are 3-1-1 overall against Bucknell. Kent State also posted a 2-1 road victory against the Bison last season.
