
Kent State falls to Maine, 3-1

ORONO, Maine โ The Kent State field hockey team fell to the University of Maine, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon.
The Black Bears struck first at 9:40 in the first quarter to take the led 1-0. With the team's momentum, Maine scored another goal less than one minute into the second quarter and put another shot in the back of the cage in the start of the third.
Less than a minute after the final Black Bears' goal, freshman Maia Sarrabayrouse put the Flashes on the scoreboard. After inserting a penalty corner to junior Victoria Tinghitella, Sarrabayrouse stepped in front of the cage to receive a pass from freshman Patricia Strunk and shot it past the keeper.
The Golden Flashes (2-4) picked up the intensity in the second half, outshooting Maine 12-6 over the final 30 minutes. Maine held a 16-13 advantage overall. Strunk led Kent State in shots on goal with four. The Flashes had 10 penalty corners compared to just three by their host.
Sophomore Cecile van Eijck had six saves.
Kent State will return home next weekend, hosting App State at Murphy-Mellis Field for the Mid-American Conference opener on Sunday Sept. 18 at 12 p.m.
