The Kent State field hockey team hosts App State for the Mid-American Conference opener on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 12 p.m.
About the Flashes
The Golden Flashes return home after traveling to Maine where they took on Hofstra and host Maine. Against Hofstra, junior Alex Sacker scored off a penalty corner to give Flashes the lead late in the third period. Both teams fought in double overtime, but Hofstra was able to get the game-winner in the second overtime (2-1).
The Flashes also fell to Maine, 3-1, but picked up intensity in the second half, which resulted in Maia Sarrabayrouse scoring her second goal of the season. Kent State outshot Maine 12-6 in the final 30 minutes of the game and led in penalty corners (10-3).
On the season, junior Victoria Tinghitella is tied for second in the MAC with three assists. Sophomore Cecile van Eijck averages a conference-best 8.33 saves per game.
Scouting Appalachian State
The Mountaineers have played three straight overtime games, including a 2-1 loss at No. 16 Duke last Friday.
Goalkeeper Addie Clark has been a brick wall in in cage, ranking second in the country in save percentage (.892), fourth in goals allowed average (0.72) and 11th in saves per game (6.60). Pauline Mangold (3g, 2a), Anna Smarrelli (4g) and Friederike Stegen (4g) share the MAC lead with eight points each.
Former Kent State goalkeeper Azure Fernsler joined the App State coaching staff this season. The 2021 MAC Defensive Player of the Year will be presented with the Janet Bachna Award, which recognizes a graduating Kent State female student-athlete demonstrating the most exceptional combined qualities of leadership, positive image, athletic ability and academic performance, prior to the contest. Fernsler, who graduated last December and joined the Mountaineers' coaching staff in February, was unable to attend the Judith K. Devine Athletic Academic Honors Dinner in April.
