
Kent State Falls to Miami in OT for First MAC Loss

OXFORD, Ohio — Graduate student Hannah Young and freshmen Corynne Hauser and Dionna Gray recorded their best scoring performances in a Kent State uniform, but host Miami was able to battle back for an 84-76 victory in overtime Wednesday night.
Young's record-setting 125th game in a Golden Flashes uniform was one of her best, as she finished with career-highs of 20 points and five steals to go with seven rebounds. She sank a pair of clutch free throws to tie the game 68-68 with 14.7 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and shot 6-for-6 overall from the charity stripe.
The freshman duo of Hauser and Gray accounted for 21 of Kent State's 36 points in the first half. Hauser finished with 23 points and a team-high five assists while Gray had 14 points.
The Flashes (10-4, 2-1 MAC) led for more than 31 minutes of game action, going ahead for the first time, 10-9, courtesy of a five-point possession consisting of a Gray three-pointer and Young jump shot midway through the opening period. The lead reached as many as 11 and was 10 with 2:08 remaining in the third quarter. Miami finally tied it, 62-62, with a traditional three-point play at the 2:11 mark in the fourth and regained the lead with 22.2 seconds left on the clock. Young then tied it with two free throws and Kent State was unable to get a shot off after forcing a turnover with 1.0 to play.
The RedHawks controlled the tip to begin overtime and started the extra session with a 7-2 run in the first two minutes. Kent State was unable to get closer than three points the rest of the way.
The Flashes were outstanding at the free throw line, knocking down 25 of 28 attempts on the night. A total of 58 free throws were shot between the teams, including 35 over the final 15 minutes of action.
Kent State returns to the M.A.C. Center on Saturday to host Toledo. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
