Kent State will go for its second win against a Power-Five opponent in the Sunshine State in an eight-day span on Sunday afternoon, this time against 15th-ranked Florida State. Tip inside of the Tucker Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Ranked 17th in the Mid-Major Top 25, the Golden Flashes (4-2) closed November with back-to-back wins, a dominant 77-40 victory over Coppin State in the home opener on Wednesday and a 67-64 win against Missouri last Saturday at the Daytona Beach Classic. It was Kent State's fourth Power-Five win in the past three seasons. The Atlantic Coast Conference is the only league to avoid a setback to the Flashes during this span.
A pair of fifth-year college players have led the way early in the season. Preseason All-MAC First Team guard Katie Shumate is averaging 11.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, while center Mikala Morris adds 10.7 points per game on 60.9% shooting to provide a true low post scoring option in her first season after transferring from Quinnipiac. After scoring in double-figures just twice in her first two seasons, forward Jenna Batsch did so in the first three games of the season and is averaging 10.2 points per game. Guard Corynne Hauser (8.8 ppg) and forwards Janae Tyler (8.2 ppg) and Bridget Dunn (6.5 ppg) have also posted double-digit scoring performances.
Scouting No. 15 Florida State
The Seminoles (5-2) have lost two straight, falling to No. 4 Stanford on a neutral court last Friday and then to Arkansas at home in an ACC/SEC Women's Basketball Challenge matchup on Thursday. Florida State is the No. 19 scoring team in the country at 83.7 points per game and was held under 79 points for the first time this season in the 71-58 setback to the Razorbacks.
All-American Ta'Niya Latson is the top scorer at 17.8 points per game. Guard O'Mariah Gordon is close behind at 16.3 points per game and averages a team-high 3.6 assists per game. Forward Makayla Timpson (12.1 ppg, 9.7 rpg) ranks in the top-10 nationally in blocked shots (23) and double-doubles (4). Guard Alexis Tucker adds 9.9 points per game and joins O'Gordon to give the Seminoles a pair of players who have made double-digit three-pointers while shooting better than 40%.
