TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Junior Bridget Dunn grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and scored nine points to just miss a double-double as Kent State fell to No. 15 Florida State, 76-49, Sunday afternoon at the Tucker Center.
The Golden Flashes (4-3) struggled to make shots throughout the contest and finished just 18-of-73 but kept it close for the first 30 minutes with a terrific rebounding effort. Led by Dunn and nine boards by redshirt senior Katie Shumate, Kent State won the rebounding battle 53-51 and limited the Seminoles to two second-chance points.
After shooting 2-of-15 from the field to start the game and trailing by seven, the Flashes got four of the next six shots to fall to outscore Florida State 10-0 over the final 2:25 and lead 14-11 at the end of the first quarter.
The Seminoles scored the first five points in the second period to take the lead, but sophomore Corynne Hauser tied it for with a jump shot and Dunn splashed a three-pointer to give Kent State a 19-16 lead. After FSU answered with an 8-0 run, junior Jenna Batsch and graduate student Abby Ogle scored to get within one late, but a 7-1 run over the final 1:30 put the Seminoles ahead 31-24 at halftime.
Trailing by double-digits midway through the third, the Flashes scored six straight, capped by Ogle's steal and layup, to get within 41-35 at the 3:32 mark, but Kent State shot 4-of-23 the rest of the game as FSU pulled away.
Batsch led Kent State with 13 points and Hauser added 10.
The Flashes will be back on the road next Sunday at Duquesne.
