The Kent State women's basketball team will play its final road game against a non-conference opponent on Sunday when it visits Duquesne for a 2 p.m. tip at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
The Golden Flashes (4-3) were unable to earn their fifth Power-Five win in the past three seasons last Sunday, falling to No. 15 Florida State, 76-49. A season-low 24.9% shooting performance did not deter Kent State from battling on the glass and posting a 53-51 rebounding advantage. This was the most rebounds against a Division I opponent since recording 53 at Akron on Jan. 27, 2018, as the Flashes allowed just two second-chance points for the second game in a row. Junior Bridget Dunn grabbed a career-high 12 boards and scored nine points to just miss her first double-double. Junior Jenna Batsch led Kent State in the scoring column with 13 points.
Preseason All-MAC First Team guard Katie Shumate leads the Flashes with averages of 10.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. After scoring in double-figures just twice in her first two seasons, forward Jenna Batsch has done so four times and is averaging 10.6 points per game. Center Mikala Morris (9.1 ppg) guard Corynne Hauser (9.0 ppg), forward Janae Tyler (7.7 ppg) and forward Bridget Dunn (6.9 ppg) have also posted double-digit scoring performances.
Scouting Duquesne
The Dukes (4-3) started A-10 play on Tuesday by defeating Fordham, 75-73, in overtime. Duquesne led by 16 entering the fourth quarter and has struggled closing games this season. The Dukes were outscored by 11 and nine, respectively, in losses to Princeton and Bowling Green after leading at the end of the third period.
The trio of Nae Bernard (12.3 ppg), Amaya Hamilton (12.3 ppg) and Megan McConnell (12.0 ppg) provide a balanced scoring attack. Bernard has made a team-best 21 three-pointers and has shot just under 40% from long range over the last five games. McConnell is among the most versatile players in the country and was named the Preseason Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Watchlist. The guard leads Duquesne with averages of 8.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game.
