
Men’s Track and Field Seeks Repeat at MAC Outdoor Championships

The Kent State men's track and field program sets out to make history this weekend at the 2023 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held from Thursday, May 11 through Saturday, May 13 at the Lee R. Jackson Track & Field Complex on the University of Akron campus.
The Golden Flashes seek back-to-back titles for the first time after scoring in all 21 events to capture the 2022 championship by a margin of 41 points.
The three-day competition begins Thursday at 10:25 a.m. with the decathlon 100-meter dash. The first event final will be the javelin throw at 3 p.m. Running trials are scheduled to start at 5:55 p.m. with the 400-meter hurdles.
Friday's action begins with the decathlon 110-meter hurdles at 12 p.m. Field events will get underway at 1 p.m. with the long jump. Running trials will begin at 4:25 p.m. with the 110m hurdles.
Action on Championship Saturday starts with the hammer throw at 10 a.m. Running events will begin with the 4x100-meter relay at 1:10 p.m. and conclude at 4:50 p.m. with the 4x400-meter relay.

SCORING FORMAT
The top six competitors in each event will score points for their team with a 10-8-6-4-2-1 scale.

PREVIEWING THE FLASHES
Kent State has 30 student-athletes entered to compete, including seven who earned All-MAC accolades last season.
Asa Hodrick enters with the fastest times in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash after taking gold in the 100m and silver in the 200m in 2022. Hodrick helped the 4x100-meter relay team place first and is part of the 4x400-meter relay team that owns the MAC's fastest time this season.
Alexander Shields seeks a second consecutive decathlon title. His personal-best 7,254 last month is nearly 600 points higher than any other competitor in the field has ever totaled. Shields ranks third in the 110-meter hurdles with a PR of 13.80 seconds.
Nolan Landis aims to repeat as discus throw champion and enters with a conference-best mark of 173'-8".
Del'Mario Hairston won the long jump last year with a personal-best mark of 24'-5" and is one of three Golden Flashes who could score in the event this year.
Jonathan Solomon owns the fastest 400-meter dash time in the MAC with a personal-best 47.33 seconds. Solomon seeks his first gold after claiming silver a year ago.
Scott Benco and Aaron Schmook rank second and third, respectively, in the javelin throw. Benco won the event in 2021 and finished second in 2022.
Alexandre Malanda enters with the No. 2 ranking in the triple jump (51'-1"). Malanda earned his first gold at the indoor championships in February after placing second at both the indoor and outdoor meets in 2022.

Golden Flashes who rank in the top-48 in the region will compete at the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Florida from May 24-27.
