MAPLE PLAIN, MN...For the second year in row, the Kent State men's golf team took second place at the Gopher Invitational.
As a team, the Golden Flashes shot a 282 in today's final round, tying for the best team score on the day.
Three of Kent State's five golfers finished in the top ten through the two-day tournament. Cade Breitenstine led the way for Kent State, finishing at three under par and placing 5th in the invitational.
Right behind him were Jordan Gilkison and Edvin Backstrom, shooting a two under for the tournament and tying for sixth. Breitenstine, Gilkison and Backstrom each recorded a team low score of 69 during one of their three rounds. Breitenstine led Kent State with 11 birdies on the weekend.
"When you have three guys in the top ten, that's pretty impressive," said head coach Jon Mills after Monday's finish.
This weekend was Backstrom's first appearance as a member of Kent State after transferring from division II Holy Names University.
"As far as his debut, I couldn't have asked for more," said Mills.
Junior Bryce Reed impressed on the final day, shooting a 70 for one under par to improve his positioning by 12 spots. Reed also recorded the only eagle for Kent State this weekend, knocking it in on the par five 12th during the first round of play.
The Golden Flashes return to action in two weeks as they will compete in the Windon Memorial, hosted by Northwestern University.
