
Kent State Routs RedHawks for Fifth Straight Victory

OXFORD, Ohio — The Kent State women's basketball team defeated Miami, 69-38, inside of Millett Hall on Wednesday for the largest margin of victory in the series since Feb. 17, 2000.
The Golden Flashes (9-4, 3-0 MAC) recorded 20 steals, the most against a Division I opponent since Dec. 15, 2015, and held a 25-6 advantage in points off turnovers. Graduate student Abby Ogle had a career-high six steals to lead six players with multiple thefts in the game. Ogle also finished with a season-high eight points.
Redshirt senior Katie Shumate notched a double-double for the second game in a row with 11 points and season-high 12 rebounds. Freshman Janae Tyler scored a team-high 16 points in 12 minutes of action.
Trailing by one after eight minutes of action, Kent State put together a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to lead by double-digits for the first time. Graduate student Mikala Morris, Shumate and Ogle made layups to make it 17-12 at the end of the first quarter. Junior Jenna Batsch and Shumate added three-pointers in the first three minutes of the second period.
The RedHawks got within seven midway through the second quarter before Tyler scored 10 points over the final 5:08 to help push the lead to 38-21 at the half.
Kent State outscored Miami 11-7 in a third quarter dominated by defense to extend the lead to 21 entering the final period.
The Flashes remained locked in for the final 10 minutes and totaled six steals and four blocks in the period while holding the RedHawks to 3-of-13 shooting.
Kent State will host Northern Illinois on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. in a nationally televised game on CBS Sports Network.
