KENT, Ohio – The Kent State field hockey team hosted Central Michigan on Friday afternoon at Murphy-Mellis Field for their fifth MAC conference contest of the season. The Flashes used an explosive offensive output to record a 7-3 win over the Chippewas.
The Flashes wasted no time getting on the front foot, scoring three goals in the opening six minutes of the match. Agustina Florio opened the scoring just two minutes in, finding the back of the cage after intercepting an errant pass by a Chippewa defender. Just two minutes later, Delfina Larripa doubled the Flashes' lead with the first goal of her collegiate career, assisted by Emma Seger. Less than two minutes after establishing a 2-0 lead, Maybritt Duwel deflected in an effort from Eva Usoz to solidify a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. The Chippewas were able to cut into the deficit just before the end of the quarter to bring the scoreline to 3-1 entering the second period.
The Flashes continued to apply pressure on the offensive end before halftime. Two minutes into the second quarter, Delfina Larripa tallied her second goal of the match on an unassisted effort to bolster the Flashes' advantage to 4-1. With less than two minutes remaining to halftime, Maybritt Duwel also secured a brace with her second goal of the match off the bench, giving Kent State a 5-1 advantage at halftime.
The Flashes were able to open the third quarter on a similar note thanks to Eva Usoz. The sophomore midfielder scored her team-best sixth goal of the season, carrying the ball from midfield and weaving past multiple Central Michigan defenders before firing into the back of the cage in what was one of the Flashes' best goals of the season to improve the team's advantage to 6-1. Sandwiched between two consolation goals by the Chippewas, Bella Carpenter successfully converted a penalty stroke in the early fourth quarter to bring the Flashes' tally to seven as the match concluded with a 7-3 scoreline. The total of seven goals is the most Kent State has scored since last season's MAC opener at Central Michigan, where the Flashes won 8-0.
Kent State will look to ride the momentum from today's victory into Sunday's crucial MAC contest against Ohio, slated to begin at noon in Athens.
