CLEVELAND — Redshirt senior Katie Shumate was named to an All-MAC Team for a Kent State record fourth time to headline the team's honorees, as the Mid-American Conference announced the All-MAC Teams and specialty award selections for the 2023-24 women's basketball season on Tuesday. In addition to a first team selection, Shumate was voted to the All-Defensive Team. Junior Jenna Batsch earned a spot on third team and Janae Tyler was named to the All-Freshman Team.
One of the best to ever wear a Golden Flashes uniform, Shumate is one of only two players who rank in the top-10 in the MAC in both scoring and rebounding with averages of 15.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. The Newark, Ohio native has continued to climb the record book in several categories and enters the postseason with 139 games played, just four off the record. Shumate sits third in program history with 172 three-point field goals while ranking fifth on the scoring list with 1,793 points and sixth with 806 rebounds. Her versatility was also on display on the defensive end, as she is the only player in the conference to rank in the top-15 in both steals per game (1.4) and blocks per game (0.7).
One of the most improved players in the conference, Batsch had the MAC's largest scoring increase (+10.3 ppg) and ranked ninth overall at 13.4 points per game. She has shot a team-best 37.9% from behind the three-point arc and is second on the team with 39 three-pointers and 16 blocked shots.
Tyler has been a major contributor during her freshman campaign, averaging 9.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game as the first player off the bench. An efficient scorer, her 58% field goal percentage is the second highest in the MAC.
Kent State begins the quest for its first MAC Tournament championship since 2002 on Wednesday against Northern Illinois. Tip from Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland is expected around 6:30 p.m.
