
Golden Flashes Win in MAC Opener

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Kent State lacrosse team (4-6, 1-0 MAC) won 16-15 against Youngstown State (0-8, 0-1 MAC) this afternoon.
Jackie Wolford scored to put the Flashes on the board, followed by a goal from Zayda Crumpton to take the lead 2-1. The Penguins tied the score, 2-2, shortly after. Morgan Halli and Crumpton added goals to bring the score 4-2 with six minutes remaining in the first quarter. Crumpton secured a hat trick and Peyton Gellin scored to increase the lead 6-2. Using the Flashes momentum, Gellin recorded her second goal of the game with one minute remaining. Kent State led in draw controls 8-2.
Youngstown State recorded another goal to bring the score 7-3 in the second quarter. Wolford secured her second goal of the game with an assist by Crumpton. The Penguins went on a two goal run, bringing the score 8-5. Wolford scored again to record her eighth straight hat trick of the season. Increasing the score 10-5, Emily Bond scored for the Flashes. Wolford netted her fourth goal of the game with an assist from Riley Floyd. Halli recorded a free position goal to bring the score 12-7. Kent State led in shots (21-14), draw controls (15-6), and ground balls (7-5) in the first half.
The Penguins scored four back-to-back goals in the third quarter, taking the score 12-11. Kiley Marconi secured her first goal of the season to end the quarter 13-11.
Youngstown State cut the deficit to one goal again, 13-12, to start the final quarter of play. Gellin battled to secure her second consecutive hat trick this season with six minutes left in regulation. The Penguins tied the score 14-14 and capitalized with another goal to take the lead for the first time in the game. Gellin scored to tie the game, 15-15, with one minute remaining. Wolford secured the game-winning goal with only 26 seconds left.
