Kent, Ohio- The Kent State soccer team started the 2024 campaign on a high note with a 2-1 a victory over Cleveland State on Thursday night. The Golden Flashes are now unbeaten in five straight season openers dating back to 2019.
For the second year in a row sophomore, Josie Morgan, scored the first goal of the season. In the 36th minute Morgan dribbled the ball around the keeper and slotted the ball away into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.
Kent state didn't take too long to double their lead thanks to a beautiful right-footed strike from outside the 18-yard box by Thea Helen Oberhoff. Siena Stambolich plays the ball into the middle of the field, Oberhoff took a touch and hit the ball from about 25 yards out and put it over the keeper's head.
Cleveland State cut the lead in half with a goal in the 79th minute, but the Flashes' defense put a quick stop to any comeback allowing just one more shot that Heidi Marshall saved with ease.
The Flashes dominated in the stat sheet holding the edge over the Viking in shots (12-3), shots on goal (13-2), and corner kicks (6-4).
Kent State's back line looked stout early, limiting the Vikings' offense to just two shots on goal.
Samantha Miller, Addy Cusick, Jules Dolinski, Allison Collins, Ali Weibel, Ava Lukyan, and Katie Henahan all made their collegiate debut. Miller, Dolinski, Collins, Weibel, and Henahan all made their first starts in the Flashes win.
