Soccer Opens Road Slate with Draw Against Youngstown State

Youngstown, Ohio- The Kent State soccer team opened their 2024 road slate with a 2-2 draw against in-state foe Youngstown State.

Youngstown State struck first on a counterattack in the tenth minute. Lianna Van Slice received a through ball from Chloe Weiland and put it in the back of the net.

The Golden Flashes got an equalizer in the 25^th minute off a header by Josie Morgan. Siena Stambolich sent in a cross from a set piece that was kicked around in the box, then the ball found Morgan's head and went into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

Kent State came out of halftime and delivered a quick strike off the boot of Samantha Miller. Ava Todd played a long set piece into the box that bounced off a Penguin defender and fell into the feet of Miller, who split the defenders and slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

The Flashes held the lead for about ten minutes until the Penguins got an equalizer from the penalty spot tie the game at two.

It was a physical that saw both team in the double digits in fouls (16-11 YSU) and tied with two yellow cards a piece.Kent State created more opportunities in the attacking half leading Youngstown in shots (20-8), shots on goal (8-4), and corner kicks (5-1).

Freshman goalkeeper, Emma Klein, made her collegiate debut coming into the game in the 33^rd minute for an injured Heidi Marshall.
