KENT, Ohio — Senior Jenna Batsch scored a season-high 23 points and classmate Bridget Dunn posted a double-double to lead Kent State in an 82-73 victory over previously-unbeaten Buffalo on Sunday at the M.A.C. Center.
The Golden Flashes (9-5, 2-0 MAC) led 10-0 fewer than three minutes into the contest on a pair of three-pointers by sophomore Mya Babbitt and layups from Dunn and sophomore Janae Tyler. Three different players splashed triples over the final 5:36 to help build a 22-15 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
After the Bulls scored the first seven points to start the second period, Kent State answered with its on 7-0 run as Batsch found Tyler underneath for an easy finish and then Babbitt for another three-pointer before scoring a basket of her own. Buffalo had a chance to make it a one-possession game at the half but missed the second of two free throws with five seconds remaining, and junior Dionna Gray went coast-to-coast and finished at the basket to beat the buzzer and make it 37-31.
The Flashes led 52-46 entering the final 10 minutes after an even third quarter.
Both teams entered the bonus with more than six minutes remaining, and Kent State was able to close out the victory by shooting 24-of-27 at the free throw line during the fourth period.
In addition to leading the Flashes in the scoring column, Batsch recorded five assists to share the lead with Gray. Dunn controlled the glass with a game-high 16 rebounds while scoring 15 points. Babbitt matched her career-high with five three-point field goals and finished with 19 points.
Kent State will be on the road for the first time during Mid-American Conference play later this week with games at Toledo on Wednesday, Jan. 8 and Ohio on Saturday, Jan. 11.
