MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The pressure defense applied by host West Virginia prevented Kent State from finding an offensive rhythm during an 88-47 setback inside of Hope Coliseum on Friday night.
The Golden Flashes (0-2) committed 32 turnovers, which the Mountaineers converted into 45 points. WVU used a combination of transition baskets and a size advantage to outscore Kent State in the paint, 44-20.
After the Mountaineers scored on the game's opening possession, the Flashes had an immediate answer. Redshirt junior Corynne Hauser was able to beat the press and found junior Mya Babbitt open in the corner. Babbitt drained the shot to go ahead 3-2 for Kent State's only lead of the evening. The Flashes made just one more field goal over the next eight minutes and trailed by 12 at the end of the first period.
An inside basket by senior Tatiana Thomas with 2:46 remaining in the second quarter brought the deficit to single-digits again at 31-22, but WVU scored the final 11 points of the half and first two baskets in the third. Baskets by Babbitt and Hauser, along with a free throw by Thomas, brought the Flashes within 20 before making just one field goal over the final seven minutes of the third period.
Babbit finished with 13 points to lead the Flashes in the scoring column. Junior Riley Rismiller added eight points and six rebounds.
Kent State will host Walsh for the home opener on Monday, Nov. 10. The game is part of a doubleheader at the M.A.C. Center and will tip at 5 p.m.
