SPRINGFIELD, Va. – The Kent State women's lacrosse team opened their 2025 campaign on Friday as the squad traveled to the east coast to take on the George Mason Patriots. The Flashes opened the season 1-0 with a wire-to-wire 13-8 victory.
The Golden Flashes wasted no time getting started in the season opener. Less than two minutes into the contest, Zayda Crumpton, Kent State's leading returning scorer, found the back of the net to give the Flashes an early lead. Just two minutes later, Lizzie Lundeen fired a successful attempt at goal to quickly double Kent State's lead. With a little under four minutes remaining in the opening quarter, the Patriots scored back-to-back goals in under one minute, before another goal by Lundeen gave Kent State a 3-2 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Less than 30 seconds into the second quarter of the game, Lundeen grabbed her third goal of the contest to give the Flashes a two-goal cushion. Just a few minutes later, Crumpton grabbed her second to give Kent State a 5-2 lead. With eight minutes remaining in the first half, Lundeen continued her hot streak, notching her fourth goal of the game to cement a four-goal lead for the Flashes. George Mason grabbed one back with a little under four minutes remaining in the half before an almost instant response by Crumpton established a 7-3 lead for Kent State. The Patriots promptly responded with a goal before the half to cut the Flashes' halftime advantage to 7-4.
The second half started similarly to the first for Kent State as Allie Lee found the back of the net less than a minute into the third quarter for her first goal of the season to restore a four-goal lead for the Flashes. George Mason came charging back, scoring three unanswered goals in a three-minute span to cut the Kent State lead to one. The Flashes responded emphatically to the run by the Patriots, tallying four unanswered goals to end the third quarter with a 12-7 advantage. Haleigh Greenberg and Morgan Halli each grabbed a pair of goals in the span to open their 2025 goalscoring accounts.
George Mason kicked off the goalscoring in the final quarter of play, finding the back of the net quickly after a disallowed Kent State goal to cut the lead to 12-8 with under 14 minutes of play remaining. The Flashes kept their composure to avoid a George Mason comeback as Lundeen notched her fifth goal of the game with seven minutes remaining to restore the five-goal advantage for the Flashes. The Patriots were able to find the back of the net with 78 seconds to go in the fourth, but it proved to be too little, too late as the Flashes closed out the 13-9 victory and clinched a 1-0 start in the 2025 season.
Lundeen opens her season tally with five goals, while Crumpton garnered three goals and three assists. Greenberg and Halli came up huge in the second half with two goals each. In goal, Sydney Davis and Ella Gravitt each tallied four saves in split action.
The Flashes have a quick turnaround as they will remain on the road to face George Washington on Sunday at 12 p.m.
