KENT, Ohio – The Kent State lacrosse team returned to Dix Stadium for a chilly Sunday afternoon matchup with Lindenwood in the Flashes' sixth game of their non-conference slate. Despite pulling within one goal through a fourth quarter comeback effort, the Flashes fell 14-11 to the Lions.
Lindenwood got off to a quick start in the cold, firing two goals within the game's first four minutes to take an early 2-0 lead. The Flashes cut the lead in half midway through the opening quarter with a Lizzie Lundeen goal assisted by Haleigh Greenberg. After another goal by the Lions, the Flashes were able to pull back within one as Lundeen grabbed her second goal of the game, once again assisted by Greenberg, finding the net through a spectacular no-look effort with just seconds remaining in the quarter. After a quick draw control, the Lions were able to find the back of the net to beat the first quarter buzzer and take a 4-2 lead into the second.
After the Lions opened the second quarter with another goal to take a 5-2 lead, the Flashes responded with strength. Five minutes into the quarter, Zayda Crumpton tallied her first goal of the game with an unassisted effort before Katlyn Binnix found the back of the net from an Allie Lee assist to cut the Lindenwood lead to 5-4. After the Lions added to their lead through a man-up goal, Crumpton responded again with her second goal of the game with less than three minutes remaining in the first half. Lindenwood was once again able to beat the buzzer by scoring with seconds remaining in the second quarter to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.
The Lions opened the second half in similar fashion to the first, firing two unanswered goals to improve their lead to 9-5. Riley Floyd responded with her fifth goal of the season through a Lundeen assist before the Lions once again found the goal with seconds remaining in the quarter to establish a 10-6 lead heading into the final period of play.
The Flashes started quickly in the fourth quarter as Crumpton secured her hat trick less than 90 seconds into action. Just three minutes later, Lundeen clinched a hat trick of her own to cut the Lindenwood lead to 10-8 with ten minutes remaining in the game. Two man-up goals by the Lions sandwiched Crumpton's fourth of the game as Lindenwood took a 12-9 lead with seven minutes left to play. The Flashes were able to find two quick goals to cut the Lindenwood lead to one at 12-11 with three minutes remaining. First, Riley LaVogue secured her second goal of the season, assisted by Crumpton, before Binnix found her second goal of the game to set up an exciting finish. Despite continuous pressure by the Flashes with a one-goal deficit, Lindenwood broke down the Kent State press to tally two open-net goals and kill the Flashes' comeback attempt by securing a 14-11 victory on the road.
Crumpton led the Flashes with four draw controls, closely followed by Megan Cook with three. Sidney Dering led Kent State defensively with two caused turnovers while Camryn Meek and Morgan Halli led field players with two ground balls each.
The Flashes return to action on Friday, March 7, at 4 p.m. as they host St. Francis at Dix Stadium.
