About the Flashes
The Golden Flashes had two very different results in the team's opening weekend of the season. Kent State opened the season at Murphy-Mellis Field last Friday with a dominant 10-1 win over Mercyhurst, with four different players recording two-goal performances. On Sunday, the Flashes took the short trip down to Columbus to take on #13 Ohio State, where the Flashes fell 9-3. Despite the negative result, it was an offensive performance to build on for Kent State as it was the team's most goals against a ranked opponent since 2021 against #25 Maine, a 4-3 overtime victory.
Emma Seger and Emma Rolston each are off to quick starts offensively for the Flashes in 2025. Seger leads Kent State with seven points through two games, including two goals and three assists. Rolston is currently the Flashes' leading goal scorer with three goals, already eclipsing her mark of two in 2024. She found the back of the cage twice against the 13th-ranked Buckeyes in last Sunday's defeat.
No. 15 Iowa will be Kent State's second ranked opponent of 2025, with last Sunday's matchup at No. 13 Ohio State being the first. After Friday's clash with the Hawkeyes, the Flashes still have contests on the schedule at No. 19 Penn State and No. 14 UMass.
In 2024, the Golden Flashes recorded just one victory outside of the Mid-American Conference, a 4-3 stroke-off win at Michigan State. Kent State has already matched this mark with the team's season-opening 10-1 win over Mercyhurst and has four more opportunities to better the 2024 mark.
Scouting #15 Iowa
Iowa has lived up to its #15 NFHCA Preseason Coaches' Poll ranking through two games in 2025. The Hawkeyes opened the season by hosting games in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in Iowa City. In the team's season-opener last Friday, Iowa earned a 5-4 victory over #20 Wake Forest to start 1-0. The Hawkeyes' second opponent on Sunday proved to be a large challenge, as they fell 4-1 to perennial national championship contender #2 North Carolina. Through two games, Iowa is led offensively by junior midfielder Dionne van Aalsum, who has a team-high three goals. Sophomore forward Hannah Maney leads the Hawkeyes with two assists, both of which came in the victory over Wake Forest. In goal, fifth-year senior Mia Magnotta has played all 120 minutes this season, tallying four saves.
Friday's matchup with Iowa will be the first time the teams have met since 2019. It will be the eleventh all-time meeting between the Flashes and Hawkeyes and the first in Iowa City since 2015. Kent State is just 1-9 all-time against Iowa, with the lone win coming in 2010 in Kent, by a score of 3-1.
