Morgan Toles enters her fourth season as an assistant coach on the Kent State women's basketball staff and second as recruiting coordinator. She mentors the team’s point guards in addition to spearheading community service and marketing efforts for the program.
Toles has aided the Golden Flashes in making two Postseason WNIT appearances during her three years on staff, which includes the program’s first-ever victory in the event at Green Bay on March 21, 2019, and a Mid-American Conference East Division title in 2017.
Much of Kent State’s success can be attributed to Toles’ mentorship of the lead guard position. Last season, Megan Carter earned a spot on the All-MAC Third Team and Asiah Dingle was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team. Naddiyah Cross, who finished her career at No. 7 on the Flashes’ career assists list, thrived under Toles’ tutelage and became the first Kent State player to total 100 or more assists in consecutive seasons since 2010-11. Additionally, the Flashes committed the fewest turnovers per game in program history during her first season on staff.
An increased amount of ball pressure set the tone for an improved Kent State defense during the 2018-19 season. The Flashes recorded 273 steals and held opposing teams to 62.2 points per game. Both are the best by a Kent State team since 2010-11.
Toles helped guide the Flashes to one of biggest turnarounds in NCAA Division I women’s basketball during the 2016-17 season, which concluded with the first MAC East Division title since 2004-05 and a Postseason WNIT berth. Kent State, which compiled a 19-13 overall record, had the nation’s largest RPI improvement jumping 222 spots from the previous season, and fifth most-improved record in the country.
For her efforts, Toles was named to the 2017 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Thirty Under 30 list, which recognizes 30 up-and-coming coaches age 30 and under at all levels of women’s basketball.
Prior to Kent State, Toles spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Florida State. The Seminoles posted a 57-13 record (.814) with an Elite Eight and a Sweet 16 appearance during those years.
Toles played the final two years of her collegiate career at Florida State, serving as a co-captain while leading the team to the 2013 NCAA Tournament during her senior season. Before transferring to Florida State, she was a two-year starting point guard at Auburn, where she earned SEC All-Freshman Team honors in 2010. Toles ranked in the top-15 nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio during her freshman and senior seasons.
A 2013 graduate with a bachelor’s degree in social science from Florida State, Toles earned a master’s degree in sport management in 2016.
