Stanford, California – The Kent State University field hockey team (2-7) wrapped up its trip to California with a 2-1 loss to No. 23 Stanford (5-3) in a thrilling overtime contest on Sunday afternoon. The Kent State offense was highlighted by a goal from freshman Sydney Carr, her first of the season.
The Flashes struck first in the 21st minute of play as Carr fired a shot past the Cardinal goalkeeper to go ahead 1-0. Sophomore Clara Rodriguez Setó recorded the assist on the play. The Flashes held the lead until early in the second period when Stanford tied the game at 1-1 on a goal scored off of a deflection from a penalty corner.
The remainder of the match became a defensive battle as the score remained tied at the end of regulation. In the first overtime period, the Flashes warded off two Stanford penalty corner opportunities in the 7-on-7 matchup before Stanford's Phoebe Crosthwaite finally scored the golden goal seven minutes into the first overtime period to win the game 2-1.
Junior goalkeeper Mary Crumlish was an instrumental part of a strong Kent State defense, tallying 6 saves in the net for the Flashes. Stanford outshot Kent State 17 to 4, with 8 shots on goal and a total of 6 penalty corners on the day.
The Flashes will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 12:00 p.m. to open the Mid-American Conference schedule on the road against Miami, the 2017 regular season and tournament champions.
