Kent State Falls to Ohio in ‘Dig for the Cure’ Match

KENT, Ohio – Kent State suffered a 3-0 (21-25, 16-25, 16-25) setback to divisional rival Ohio in Thursday night's 'Dig for the Cure' match inside of the M.A.C. Center.
The Golden Flashes (7-8, 0-3 MAC) posted a .375 hitting percentage in a competitive first set. Kent State grabbed its largest lead of the night, 7-3, on a kill by sophomore Melissa Kolurbasi. Ohio fought back for a 15-13 lead, but freshman Morgan Copley and sophomore Danie Tyson combined for a block and Kolurbasi added another kill to even the set at 15-15. However, the Bobcats scored the next three points and eventually extended the lead to 23-18. The Flashes continued to fight and took three of the next four points before falling, 25-21.
The second set featured seven ties and two lead changes, but Ohio was able to begin pulling away on a kill by Maggie Nedoma that made it 12-11 and sparked a 6-2 run. The visiting Bobcats added a 6-1 run to end the set and take a 2-0 lead at the intermission.
Kent State led 4-2 early in the third set before Ohio went ahead for good with a 6-1 run. The Flashes managed to score consecutive points just once the rest of the set and fell, 25-16.
Morgan Copley led Kent State with eight kills. Middle blockers Myla King and Danie Tyson had strong offensive nights, as both registered five kills on 11 errorless attempts. Tyson added a match-high four total blocks.
Redshirt sophomore Alex Haffner had a team-best 16 assists and junior Natalie Tagala added 13 assists.
Sophomore Erin Gardner led the defense with 14 digs.
Kent State will head to Central Michigan for its first road contest in Mid-American Conference play on Saturday at 8 p.m.
