INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Kent State lacrosse team was defeated by Butler 13-10 in a tough road battle that saw the Flashes (0-3) holding a lead midway through the second half before four straight Butler goals secured the Bulldogs' victory.
"We came out on our heels early in the game," said head coach Brianne Tierney. "Credit to Butler, they capitalized on our slow start."
The Bulldogs (1-2) started fast, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before Abby Jones scored her seventh goal of the season to get the Golden Flashes on the board. With 17 minutes to go in the first half, Meghan Cawood rifled her first career goal to pull the Flashes within two, 4-2.
Madison Rapier tallied her first career goal late in the first half with an assist from Kelli Bailey.
"We had multiple points from multiple players, and that growth is indicative of the hard work and game experience we are earning," said Tierney. "We are looking forward to facing Notre Dame and continuing our upward trajectory on Sunday."
The Flashes trailed 8-6 at the half but came out firing in the second half, scoring three straight goals to take their first lead in program history, 9-8. Megan Kozar got the second-half scoring underway for KSU before Lluna Katz fired two goals in 32 seconds to give the Flashes the lead. She led the team with her first career hat trick.
Four straight Butler goals followed, and the Bulldogs closed the game on a 5-1 run to earn a 13-10 victory.
Grace Merrill, who led the country in saves per game entering play, finished with 10 saves in the loss.
Butler was led by a trio of Bulldogs, Ashley Guerra (3g, 4a), Sydney Pattison (3g) and Haley Hallenback (3g).
