Previewing the Flashes
The outdoor season debuts for All-Americans Samory Fraga, TJ Lawson and Craig Stevens, Jr. will highlight the 27 members of the men's team scheduled to compete. Fraga (long jump) earned Honorable Mention All-America honors at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and set the KSU outdoor program last spring. Lawson, a two-time outdoor All-American, will look to repeat as the Tennessee Relays decathlon champion after winning the event by more than 700 points a year ago. Stevens, Jr. is also a two-time outdoor All-American last year and has won two straight Mid-American Conference outdoor triple jump titles.
Asa Hodrick, who was named MAC Freshman Track Performer of the Year during the indoor season, is slated for four races in his collegiate outdoor debut. Hodrick will run in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash on Friday, and will be part of the 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relays teams on Saturday.
In field events, Trevor Detillion leads the way with a No. 19 national ranking and PR of 185'-8" in the discus throw and will also compete in the shot put. Christian Champen is entered in the pole vault invitational and is ranked 35th nationally after clearing 17'-0.25" last weekend at the Northeast Ohio Quad. Jake Wickey (hammer throw) and Ryan Demaline (shot put) are second in the MAC in their respective events.
Kent State will have 23 members of the women's team. Mi'Angel Daniels (100H, 200m, 4x100, 4x400), Irene Skinner (200m, 400m, 4x100, 4x400) and Nicole Yeargin (200m, 400m, 4x100, 4x400) will each compete in four events on the track. Yeargin will run the 200-meter dash for the first time in 2019 but clocked a MAC-leading time of 11.75 in the 100-meter dash at the Raleigh Relays.
Alyssa Matheny will look to build on an impressive start to the outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays, where she cleared a PR height of 5'-10.50" for a No. 13 national ranking in the high jump. Maria Horrigan and Ally Thompson will compete in the pole vault invitational. Gabby Bailey will throw in both the discus and shot put. Bailey ranks second in the MAC and 47th in the nation in both events.
