MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - On Thursday, the Kent State lacrosse team traveled to Central Michigan, to take on a familiar Mid-American Conference opponent in the Chippewas. But Central Michigan got the best of the Golden Flashes, and came away with the victory, 20-6.
The Chippewas got off on a good foot to start the game, going on a 6-0 run to open up the first quarter. This was highlighted by two goals by Hannah Potter, who would go on to score a total of four. But at the 3:42 mark in the first quarter, junior Morgan Kubicki would put the Flashes on a board with her fifth goal of the season.
This was a step in the right direction for Kent State, but another 6-0 run by Central Michigan following the Kubicki goal put the Flashes in a serious hole less than halfway through the second quarter. Senior Kelli Bailey picked up her seventh goal of the season to the Chippewas' run at 3:56 in the second quarter, but the damage inflicted upon the Flashes was already severe. Sophomore Ella Gravitt was brought in to goalie in the second quarter to replace junior Madison Flannigan, but she was unable to slow down the Chippewas attack offensively. Sophomore goalie Taylor Monturo would eventually see action as well towards the end of the game.
The third quarter was Kent State's best of the game, as they traded goals with Central Michigan, 2-2. Both of the Flashes' goals came via the stick of sophomore Jackie Wolford, who scored her 15th and 16th goals of the season. But heading into the final quarter, the Chippewas still held a 10-goal lead, and with no signs of relenting.
However, senior Megan Kozar would have something to say about that, as she netted her 10th goal of the season with 13:29 to go in the quarter. She would go on to grab her 11th of the season as well, with 4:16 to go in the game. The rest of the quarter belonged to the Chippewas though, who secured their lead and ultimately the fate of the game by scoring an additional six goals in the period, to make the final score 20-6.
The Flashes now get back on the road and travel to Milwaukee, to face off with Marquette. That game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
