KENT, Ohio - The Kent State lacrosse team took on Robert Morris at Dix Stadium Wednesday. And although they gave a valiant effort, the Golden Flashes were unable to pull off the upset, losing to their conference foes, 11-8.
In what was one of the closest games played between these two schools, Kent State came out firing in the first quarter, scoring the first goal of the game only 11 seconds into regulation off the stick of sophomore Jackie Wolford. Wolford, who would go to put up her third game with three goals scored on the season, found the back of the net with 11:20 to go in the first quarter as well, giving the Flashes a 2-0 advantage.
But the Colonials would not be silenced for much longer, as their high-powered offense went on a 7-0 run to finish out the first quarter and begin the second. The Flashes would then go on a scoring run of their own, sparked by a woman-up goal by junior Morgan Kubicki. The 4-0 run also included goals by senior Abby Jones (two) and senior Kelli Bailey. This put the score at 7-6 Robert Morris with 3:25 left in the third quarter, and it would stay that almost until the end of the quarter, when the Colonials got back on the board in the form of a goal by Julia Koterwas.
Two more Robert Morris goals then followed, making the score 10-6 with 12:27 left. Kent State would answer back with two more of their own, courtesy of Wolford and senior Madison Rapier. Just over halfway through the fourth quarter, the Flashes were within reach of tying things up.
Robert Morris proceeded to play keep-away the rest of the game though, draining precious time off the clock that made a Flashes comeback less and less likely. A Colonials goal with 2:39 to go by Jenna Irwin made the score 11-8 Robert Morris, and all-but put the game out of reach.
But the Flashes definitely gave the visiting Colonials a run for their money, forcing 15 turnovers and causing Robert Morris to incur four yellow cards. RMU dominated in the draw control department, getting 17 of 23 total attempts, but Kent State won the ground ball war, 19-15, and had more saves than the Colonials, 11-10. Additionally, worth noting is that Morgan Kubicki had two assists for the Flashes in this one, and Abby Jones had one as well.
It'll now be a quick turnaround for Kent State, as their next game will be right back at Dix Stadium on Friday, when they take on the Cincinnati Bearcats. That game is set to start at 4 p.m.
